RESIDENCY AT THE ATLANTIC CENTER FOR THE ARTS (March 7-24)

Outline of plans for residency for at the Atlantic Center for the Arts: I am interested in exploring, with the associates, the areas of intersection between composition and performance, composition and improvisation, and composition and arranging. Particular attention will be given to composing for percussion and during the last week of the residency our resident "ACA" ensemble (associates and me) will be joined by the composer/performers that make up the Talujon Percussion quartet.

Although the residency will focus on "process," nothing invigorates a process like an ambitious goal. From the outset we will set our sights on presenting a public concert to be held at the end of the residency. Each afternoon we will meet to develop material for this event by discussing issues relevant to composing for percussion as well as the other instruments on hand, and rehearsing material composed or arranged by individual associates. Of course, improvisation will play a large role in developing material as a collaborative group. I would hope that we might involve the associates in visual art and writing in collaborative ventures as well.

Applicants should be either a) committed composers with significant interest and some experience in performing their own music and a willingness to participate in performances of music by fellow associates; or b) committed performers with significant interest and some experience in composing music for themselves. In either case an interest in improvisation whether developed or not is assumed. Send a bio and one tape or CD containing material that is relevant to the applicant profile and residency description above.
